Plumbspec completed the medical gas installation for a new private specialist hospital in Thorndon, Wellington. This commercial plumbing and gas project involved converting an existing commercial building into a fully operational medical facility, which meant the plumbing and specialist services had to be carefully planned around the existing structure.

Our team worked closely with the architects, builders, and medical supply company to plan the medical gas pipe routes through the building. The copper pipework needed to reach patient rooms, operating theatres, and other clinical areas while fitting around electrical services, ventilation, fire systems, ceilings, and new wall layouts.

The system was designed to supply oxygen, carbon dioxide, and vacuum suction throughout the hospital. Once the main pipe network was installed, we fitted and connected the specialist bed head units in each patient room. These units brought the required medical gas services together beside the bed, giving clinical staff practical access while keeping the finished rooms tidy and organised.

The operating theatres also required carefully positioned outlets to suit the room layouts and the specialist medical equipment being installed.

Because the building was being converted rather than constructed from the ground up, coordination played a major part in the project. Regular communication with the wider construction team helped us manage service clashes, adjust pipe routes, and keep the work aligned with the build programme.

Once the installation was complete, the full medical gas system was tested and commissioned. Every pipe, connection, outlet, and bed head unit was checked to confirm the correct services were reaching the right locations and performing as required.

The completed system now supplies medical oxygen, CO₂, and vacuum suction across the hospital’s patient rooms and operating theatres. The project shows Plumbspec’s ability to manage specialist pipework, detailed coordination, and final commissioning within a complex Wellington commercial fit-out.
