If you’re like us you may have recently noticed that temperatures are dropping, evenings are approaching dawn quicker and streets are filled with beautiful golden leaves – all signs that autumn is here and winter is literally around the corner.

But, before winter fully hits us Wellingtonians, the team at Plumbspec thought we should take a minute to look at the ways you can prepare your home’s plumbing and heating. Here are 5 simple steps to follow in autumn to get your plumbing ready for winter.

1. Clean your gutters

With leaves starting to fall your gutters and drainpipes will start to collect with leaf litter and debris. A good rule of thumb is to clean your gutters at least twice a year- once in autumn and again in spring.  The more litter you can remove from your guttering the better. Frequently cleaned gutters will ensure water can freely flow from your roof into the ground seamlessly, leaving little chance for blockages and clogs.

2.  Disconnect your Garden Hose

As the temperature becomes cooler, filling up the kid’s pool and washing the car in the summer heat will be well behind you. It’s now time to disconnect that garden hose of yours. Our Wellington Plumbers suggest disconnecting your hose so that you don’t have to worry about any water that still may be in the hose freezing when things cool down.

3. Check out your hot water system

There’s nothing worse than being stuck with a cold shower in winter! Your hot water system will have to work harder in cooler weather. To help your hot water system, run as efficiently and smoothly as possible have it inspected. Your local Wellington Plumbers can flush out and remove any sediment buildup to avoid corrosion. Rest assured knowing that your water system will stand by you in the chillier months.

4. Have your gas heaters serviced

While your local Wellington plumbers are inspecting your hot water system, it is worthwhile servicing your gas heaters too. Annual service checks are highly recommended. Gas is not something you should risk. Keep your family both safe and warm this upcoming winter.

5. Order a Plumbing Inspection

Colder weather can negatively impact your plumbing systems. Call your local Wellington Plumbers at Plumberspec to request an inspection and ensure your plumbing is ready for autumn and the winter months ahead. Get in touch, call us on 0800 232 650 for all your plumbing needs.
